“Dharma – one’s true path in life Shala – the house of learning”
Dharma Shala Yoga School’s lineage is based on the 8 limbs of yoga and has been greatly influenced by the Sivananada teachings, the Ashtanga practice and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Traditionally, every yoga class at Dharma Shala followed a strict and structured sequence. Today however, class teachings follow a free-flowing classical vinyasa sequence that is steeped in mindfulness and breath awareness. At Dharma Shala Bondi Yoga School, we teach beginners, vinyasa, variations of yin, alignment, prenatal, mums 'n bubs, kids and pre-schoolers. Each class brings a holistic approach to the practice with avenues to explore pranayama and chanting with time for reflective meditation.
At Dharma Shala we invite you to participate in group silent meditation time. You may use a technique of your choice ie Hindu Veidic Mantra, Buddhist, Mindfulness etc. If you have never meditated before, the teacher can offer you guidance to develop a self practice during this time.
All teachers of Dharma Shala are highly experienced and passionate. Each teacher contributes to the school’s comprehensive range of classes through their unique style and speciality, making Dharma Shala one of the most diverse schools for yoga practice in Sydney.
If I liken my practice to a bus journey the first trip took place at Dharma Shala (nearly a decade ago). I get on many other buses but my favourite and most meaningful journeys are from the Dharma Shala route! I honestly believe if I had started my practice elsewhere my journey may not have been so long and rewarding. I'd like to thank all of those (Rick, Lenni, Eve, Marja Nadine, Kath, Anna - the list goes on) for helping me create space for yoga in my life and helping me create space in life due to my practise.
Om shanti and namaste - Ange (and now little Magnus!)
Dharma Shala Origins
Dharma Shala is Bondi’s Original Yoga School and one of the longest standing yoga schools in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Located on the former premises of the Moses spice-shop, Dharma Shala first opened 14 years ago. Its mission was to offer an authentic yoga practice for spiritual seekers of the community, where teachers could give a transmission of inner connection and students could unite with their true Self.
Dharma Shala Today
In 2014 Rod Sen and Mari Pizzinga, founders of the Livingroom Yoga School and The Yoga Travel Company, acquired Dharma Shala. Rod and Mari are dedicated to their passion and the school’s mission in serving the Bondi community through yoga. They are also committed to maintaining the boutique and independent nature of the school.
